Thick hair after 40: Francesca's story

Francesca's story
“Since I started using Rootz, in just one month I have already seen the change in my hair.”
Francesca, Rootz customer, after 30 days of use. Results vary from person to person.
Francesca wrote to us after her first month with Rootz and sent us the photo you see above. Her experience is shared by many women: at some point your hair changes, and nobody explains why. Let's start there.
At some point you notice it: your ponytail is thinner, your parting looks wider, your blow-dry does not last as long. You have not changed shampoo or habits. Your hair has changed. After 40 it happens to a great many women, and almost nobody explains why, or what you can really do about it.
The good news: full-looking hair at 40, 50 and 60 is not a matter of luck. It is a matter of routine, adapted to how hair works at this stage.
What changes in your hair after 40
The diameter gets smaller
Each individual hair tends to grow thinner. The number may stay similar, but your hair as a whole looks less full.
The growth cycle gets shorter
The growth phase lasts less, so hair struggles to reach its former lengths and sheds more often.
The scalp produces less sebum
The scalp becomes drier and less elastic. The lengths lose their natural protection and look dull and frizzy.
Hormones change
With perimenopause and menopause, the drop in oestrogen affects how your hair looks. It is a natural transition, not a flaw to hide.
Grey hair has a different texture
It is coarser and drier, and frequent colouring adds stress to a fibre that is already more fragile.
The mistakes that make hair look even thinner
- Using the same products you used at 25. A drier scalp needs more nourishment, not more cleansing.
- Neglecting the scalp. That is where hair is born: caring only for the lengths is doing half the job.
- Skipping the mask for fear of weighing hair down. Dehydrated hair breaks, and every broken hair is lost volume.
- Straighteners and hairdryer on maximum. A thinner fibre tolerates heat far less.
- Tight ponytails and buns every day. Constant pulling weakens the hairline.
The 6 rules for full-looking hair after 40
1. Start with the scalp
Massage your scalp with your fingertips for 2-3 minutes at every wash. It is the simplest and most neglected step.
2. Nourish before washing
An oil applied to the scalp and lengths at least 30 minutes before shampooing softens the skin and protects the fibre during washing.
3. A mask at every wash
After 40 it is no longer an extra. Hydrated hair is more elastic, breaks less and reflects light better: three things that make hair look fuller.
4. Protect the ends every day
A few drops of oil on dry ends seal split ends and tame frizz, the number one enemy of a full look.

Hairdryer on medium heat, straighteners only when needed. Dry the roots with your head upside down to add volume without products.
6. Watch your plate and your sleep
Protein, iron, zinc and B vitamins are the building blocks of hair. Prolonged stress and too little sleep show up in your hair after two or three months.
The Rootz routine for women over 40, in 30 days
The Kit Crescita Estrema brings together the three steps hair needs most at this stage: cleansing the scalp, nourishing the lengths, protecting the ends.
Before washing: Hair Oil as a pre-wash treatment
Once or twice a week, apply a few drops of Hair Oil directly to the scalp and massage gently. Leave on for at least 30 minutes, or overnight.
In the shower: Shampoo
Apply to wet hair and massage the scalp for 2-3 minutes, then rinse.
After shampooing: Mask
Spread it through lengths and ends, leave on for 5-10 minutes and rinse well.
Every day: Hair Oil on the ends
A few drops on lengths and ends, dry or slightly damp, without rinsing.
Follow the routine for at least 30 days before judging it: hair responds to consistency, not to haste. Results vary from person to person.

When to talk to a doctor
If you notice sudden thinning, patches, a parting that widens quickly or shedding that lasts more than three months, talk to your doctor or a dermatologist. A cosmetic product takes care of the appearance of hair and scalp, but it does not replace a medical assessment.
Frequently asked questions
Is it normal to have thinner hair after 40?
Yes, it is a very common natural change. With the right routine you can visibly improve the appearance, shine and strength of your hair.
Do I have to cut it short to make it look fuller?
No. A blunt cut, without heavy layering, gives more body to any length. The health of the ends matters more.
How often should I wash it?
Two or three times a week for most scalps after 40, which tend to be drier.
Doesn't oil weigh fine hair down?
Not if you use it as a pre-wash treatment before shampooing and, on dry hair, only on the ends and in a few drops.
